My first Opening Night was met by 34,000 Marlins faithful ready for another season of baseball in Miami. On behalf of the Marlins Foundation, I would like to wish everyone a happy 2013 baseball season!
A special thanks to some of our community partners who came out to support us: Miracle League of Miami-Dade, Best Buddies, City Year, Villa Lyan, Special Olympics Florida – Miami-Dade County, Breakthrough Miami, Easter Seals, Miami Children’s Museum, the Ann Storck Center, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Young at Art, Biscayne Nature Center, Seraphic Fire and Shake-a-leg Miami.
As you enjoy some photos from Opening Night, remember to value every moment this great game has to offer. Willie Stargell put it best:
When you start the game, they don’t say “Work ball!” They say “Play ball!”
What was Derek Deitrich doing talking to a group of young baseball players about skim, whole, and half-and-half? He was putting on a demonstration of jaw dropping juggling tricks at the conclusion of the Marlins Spring Training Youth Clinic, of course!
The Marlins Foundation held our annual Spring Training Youth Clinic at Roger Dean Stadium with Placido Polanco, Rob Brantly, Nathan Eovaldi, and Derek Dietrich. They helped kids work on the fundamentals of fielding, batting, pitching, and base running. Even a wily old veteran like me learned a thing or two!
Proceeds will go on to benefit the Florida State League Scholarship Program.

Last August, we held the Fox Sports Fantasy Auction which was an enormous success. Not only did we raise over $90,000 dollars to benefit the Marlins Education Fund, but we were able to provide some unique, once in a lifetime experiences for our incredible fan base. Don’t just take my word for it, here is a selection from our winner of “Road Trip with the Marlins,” Rob Koppelman:
“As a long-time Marlins fan, and a lifelong fan of baseball, it was a pleasure and a privilege to make the weekend trip to New York and stay in the team’s hotel in Manhattan.
The trip included many highlights in addition to the field-level seats behind the Marlins’ dugout for each of the weekend’s three games against the Mets at Citi Field. Prior to Friday evening’s game, I was given a field pass to observe batting practice. But, that was made all the more enjoyable when Marlins’ television broadcaster Rich Waltz introduced me to several of the players, including Jose Reyes, Justin Ruggiano, Jeff Brantley and Carlos Lee. For a 53 year-old college professor, it seemed a little strange asking these players for autographs, but I was given an official MLB baseball for this purpose, and became a kid again in doing so.
Following Saturday afternoon’s game, broadcaster Craig Minervini took me to dinner at the Shake Shack in midtown Manhattan. … It was a bonus to have Craig interview me in the stands during Sunday’s finale, and he gave me a chance to tell a story I had shared with him the night before.
As I look back on the weekend, I feel nothing but respect for the Marlins Foundation, the people associated with the team whom I met, and gratitude for having had this opportunity to see the Marlins up close and personal.”
It always feels good to be able to provide people with this kind of unique experience, all while benefitting charity. We’re all looking forward to this year’s Fantasy Auction… In the meantime, you can always checkout some great auction items available year-round at marlins.com/auction.

Benny Rodriguez: Man, this is baseball. You gotta stop thinking. Just have fun. – The Sandlot
On Sunday, October 28th, Marlins Park hosted a once-of-a-lifetime game between the mighty South Florida Sandlot 13u’s and the brave Pembroke Lakes 13u Bulldogs! These little leaguers got to play ball like the big boys with access to the club houses, dug out and a Fox Sports Florida presence. The game was a teeth clincher as it ended tied at 2-2!
This opportunity was given to these two incredible teams through the Field of Dreams Experience, won at the Marlins’ Foundation Fantasy Auction Event.
